Review – Tuscany Suites and Casino in Las Vegas

The last time we were in Las Vegas was 2009. My family and my hubby’s cousin and family stayed in Excalibur Hotel which is situated near the famous MGM Hotel. And after 8 years, here we are again and this time with my dear Auntie.

My husband arranged for this short trip and he booked us in Tuscany Suites and Casino near The Strip. It is reminiscent from those beautiful villas in some Italian village with fine stucco finish. The Tuscany Suites and Casino is exactly that, a beautiful big villa with clusters of other sleeping quarters in a compound.

What I like:

The room we have booked is a Junior Suite. The room was very spacious with two full double beds. It is huge!

The big room has a sofa or seating quarters, and a kitchenette with a decent dining table and chairs.

(I took this photo standing from the edge of the bed and the room is really huge!)

The sofa doubled as a sleeping bed for my husband.

The welcome note on the TV screen. Not all hotels we have booked in the past, even the most new and modern had welcome notes as you enter.

The beds are super comfortable. I slept like a baby!

Our room has a nice view. I can see the winding alley that leads to other sleeping quarters, the main hotel building, and the pool area.

It is a quite hotel.

There are ice vending machines in our floor.

There is an in-house casino.

There is a restaurant, a coffee shop and even a souvenir shop inside the hotel.

There are ample parking spaces for visitors and they are free.

The location is great and there are plenty of souvenir shops nearby.  The Strip is also walking distance from the hotel if you feel like walking.

Free wifi, and fast connection too.

It is very near McCarran Airport.

The food in the Tuscany Gardens restaurant is really good!

The bathroom is clean. The bathroom is very spacious, and the toilet is enclosed.

The lobby area and the beautiful passage between sleeping blocks.

What I don’t like:

The main hotel and different from the Casino entrance although they are connected. You have to park near the main entrance of the hotel so you don’t have to walk much  towards the concierge, especially if you have luggages. We didn’t realize there were 2 main entrances so we parked in the entrance which was the Casino entrance. We had to carry our luggages back to the car and drive of to the other parking area nearest to the main hotel’s lobby.

There are several building blocks for sleeping quarters. You have to walk outside to reach the main hotel. It’s not a long walk though and passing by the nice alley behind several sleeping quarters is really not that cumbersome. I just thought it would be nice to just have all the sleeping quarters in one area. But hey, this is just my opinion. The whole compound where the Tuscany Suites and Casino is really a quiet and relaxing one.

And before I forget, it didn’t appeal to me that they don’t have any microwave so we could heat our food.

Nearby attractions:

Howard Hughes Center
The Bellagio
LINQ Promenade
Flamingo Wildlife Habitat
The Monorail the plies around the Strip
Outlet malls nearby

My recommendation: 4 out of 5

I would have given this beautiful, clean, and homey hotel if it wasn’t for the main hotel’s entrance confusion, I would be happy to give this hotel my five star rating.

I highly recommend this property if you are heading to Las Vegas and you want a quiet place to relax, and still have a good time when you want to. The location is perfect for us. You can walk or take a drive to the Strip if you like because it is just around the corner from this hotel.

Review – Bosign Portable 2-in-1 Tablet Holder & Travel Pillow

For frequent travelers like myself, a part of the important things that I must have when traveling is a good neck pillow. My family and I loves traveling to far away places and being on air for more than half a day is just too much. So, we all make sure that we have our own neck pillows to carry.

I have tried many types of neck pillows before. I have tried the ones with micro bead foams, memory foam, inflatable ones, and even those that are filled with synthetic fibers. So far, the one I have been constantly using is my inflatable one (different brand) which is quite handy and easily tucked inside my handbag. However, I have to give my thumbs up for the Bosign Portable 2-in-1 Tablet Holder and Travel Pillow because it’s 2 product in 1!

What I like:

  • The neck pillow is not too tight on my neck and has a strip with snap to hold it in place.
  • It serves not only as a neck pillow but also a very small, portable pillow as head support when napping.
  • It also serves as a tablet holder or cradle so it gives off that nice angle when place on the lap while on the go.
  • I like the cute shape and design. It looks like a “tooth” and even if it has a square shape, it still looks sleek not not cumbersome.
  • It contains micro bead foams so it follows your bag’s shape, and contour.
  • The neck strap aids as a clip to secure it on your luggage handle or bag.
  • It is very lightweight.
  • It is compact.
  • The outer cover is removable and washable.
  • The fabric cover has grooves on the side to hold your tablet in place if you want a landscape orientation on the screen.

  • You can type easily with both hands as the grooves help the tablet in place so no need to support with your other hand.
  • I like the dark gray colour of the cover because it’s not easily soiled unlike light colored travel pillows that tend to get dirty with few uses.

What I don’t like:

Nothing. This compact travel pillow and neck holder in one serves its purpose perfectly.

Specification:

Colour : Salt and Pepper Gray
Material : Pillow of 100% polyester
Width : 28 cm (11″)
Height : 9 cm (3 1/2″)

My recommendation:

I give this product a superb rating for serving two purposes at once. Not only that you save money because you get a travel/neck pillow and at the same time, a tablet holder too. I like how compact and lightweight it is so it doesn’t make it very cumbersome to bring anywhere I go, be it on a long flight, train ride or road trip with the family. I think my days of using the inflatable neck pillow is over. I will use this Bosign Portable 2-in-1 Tablet Holder & Travel Pillow from now on.

Review – Olixar Ultimate Mains Universal Fast Charger & Travel Adapters

If you travel a lot, then you would know why having universal adapters is a necessity I had experience traveling to Europe without any universal adapter that would be usable in the region. So, when my phone’s and camera’s batteries depleted their charge, my family and I had to scour the nearby stores and even souvenir shops to find one at night. And in Europe, shops close a bit early that the ones here in Dubai. Aside from finding one a bit late, I also had to pay around € 7 for one adapter. Lesson learned the hard way…

So, each time we travel, I always have a separate pouch where I keep all my gadgets’ cords and adapters. And I am glad I have this Olixar Ultimate Mains Universal Fast Charger & Travel Adapters because it can be use in many other regions, aside from Europe.

What I like:

  • Portable and lightweight
  • It is compatible with my iPhone and iPad (iOS is very fussy and sometimes won’t take other chargers aside from the original one that came with the iPhone) and it was instantly recognized by my phone and tablet when I plugged them.
  • *It is indeed a fast charger. I plugged my mini iPad at 37% battery life with other apps running in the background and not switching it to Flight Mode (it charges faster in Flight Mode – trivia!) and in less than a minute, it is already up by 3%!
  • The adapters fasten securely to the “base.”
  • The adapters can be used in more than 150 countries, thus making it the perfect universal adapter charger to carry along.

Note:
* Not all mobiles and tablets or other gadgets will have the same structure. Some may mot be built to allow “fast charging” mode.

What I don’t like:

Nothing. I like this Olixar Ultimate Mains Universal Fast Charger & Travel Adapters a lot and it will be very usable for my travels.

Specifications:

Input: AC 100-240V 50/60Hz
Output: 5V/3A, 9V/1.67A, 12V/1.2A
Dimensions: 32 x 50 x x 46mm plus adapter
Adapters: UK, US, AUS and EU

My recommendations:

This is something I will highly recommend to others because of its fast charging action and portability.

Hostal Natura Barcelona Review

This is the first time my daughter and I visited Barcelona. I thought I would have a hard time looking for this property. I had to search the place and check the map several times. I even Googled it and checked the street view from where we would alight from Plaça Catalunya.

Hostal Natura Barcelona was not very difficult to find. After alighting at Plaça Catalunya from the airport, we just walked for 15 minutes and we were already in front of the hostel. It is tucked in a residential building so it does not have any lobby with concierge. You actually have to ring the bell and allowed to get inside.
We were surprised to see a big room and it was enough for me and my daughter. It had basic amenities but no mini bar. There are vending machines in the hallway so you can buy hot coffee or sodas and water if you want. I also liked the fact that the hostel management provided us with a box of chocolates which my daughter and I loved so much. They were delicious and it’s a rare treat to find a gift when you come to your room.

The room allotted for us was Room no. 3 which was in the middle. It didn’t have a balcony but it has a small enclosure, like a pocket garden minus the plants that we have access to. The room was dark because the ceiling was high. Even if we switched all the lights on, it’s just not as bright as I would like my room to be. However, the big window provided natural light even until past 8PM when the sun was still up.

The a/c works well but we couldn’t change the thermostat as instructed because it was centralised. We were also asked to keep our TV in low volume esp at night. However, we found out that other guests were not as quiet as us as we would hear them bang the doors and talk loudly in the hallway. That didn’t prevent us from getting a decent sleep.

They offer free wi-fi too!

The bathroom was just enough for us. The sink was too compact for use. The bath towels were replaced regularly during our stay and the room cleaned well.

The location is really great. There are nearby eateries if you want to grab a munch. There’s a small grocery too in the same area where you can buy some essentials. Walking distance from the hostel is the Plaça Catalunya, Passeig de Gracia, Diagonal Ave. and during a nice weather, you can walk towards other places of interests too.

I would definitely recommend this place to my family and friends and I don’t mind staying in here again in our next visit.

Hostal Natural Barcelona is located at Calle Roger de Lluria 33, ppal 2, 08009 Barcelona, Spain.

Nearby attractions:
Plaça Catalunya
Sagrada Familia
Las Ramblas
Casa Batllo
Diagonal Avenue
La Pedrera
Passeig De Gracia

My recommendation: 4 out of 5

I am giving this property a 4 star rating. It is located in a very nice place which is walking distance to Plaça Catalunya. There are nearby eateries and you can actually walk to some attractions. The hotel is very clean, spacious (for European standards) and quiet. Getting a taxi is not an issue as you can walk few metres away to hail a cab. There is a small grocery just a building away so you can buy some food and beverage when you get hungry as the hotel does not provide any food except for a coffee and soda vending machine in the hallway.

This hotel is perfect to unwind after a long day of walking in Barcelona. The price is just right for a European stay.

Review – Element Times Square by Westin in Manhattan

Element Times Square by Westin is the second property we have stayed in during the Thanksgiving/Black Friday holiday last November/December 2014.  I liked this hotel in some levels but had to be very objective with my findings.

My husband and I booked a King Room for $358 without taxes for 2 nights via
Booking.com.

The property belongs to the Westin group of hotel chains and it is very chic and modern. However, not all properties are free from any imperfections. This hotel has some flaws too. Read my review below:

What I like:

The very comfortable bed! The firmness is just right and I slept like a baby even when there were revellers in the nearby pub.

The property is chic with modern amenities.
The long vanity desk.
The hi-tech phone and flat screen TV that boasts plenty of channel selections.

It has a fully functional kitchenette complete with microwave, top cooking range, big refrigerator, dishwasher, percolator, kitchen sink with faucet and running water, utensils with wine cork-screw, pots and pans and chinaware.

The bathroom is very spacious and clean.

The big closet complete with pressing board, flat iron, safe and mini-drawers.

The complimentary coffee, tea and water.
The grab-n-go breakfast. They don’t have a wide selection but the sandwiches are enough to satisfy your morning hunger pang and they also serve cereals, juices, coffee and tea. You can get many sandwiches as you like too.
The complimentary coffee and tea at the lobby area where guests and visitors can warm off while waiting for their friends or transport.

The friendly, fast and efficient staff. I even borrowed a duct tape from one of the staff because our luggage broke and we had to do a quick fix as we were leaving that day. The nice lady staff searched in their stock room and lent me a full roll quite happily who even assured me that it was okay to be used. I hope I have taken down her name to commend her personally.
Fast check-in and check-out.
The location is fabulous. We were walking distance to the subway station, Times Square, Madison Square Garden, Port Authority, situated in the Garment district of Manhattan.
Pets are allowed upon request.

What I don’t like:
I was almost at the point of giving this hotel my highest rating of 5 stars however, towards the last day of our stay, upon checking-out actually, I saw few hotel staff unload “heaps of garbage in huge, clear plastic trash bags” from one of the lift used to serve the guests of the hotel. What’s very disturbing was, it was in plain view; it was done during the afternoon (approx. around 4-5 p.m., there were plenty of guests waiting in the lounge for their airport pick-up transportation or just plain lounging and I was one of them). I looked at the other guests’ reactions and they were as surprised as I was, perhaps, even shocked because I was thinking, maybe they could have done it discreetly around midnight or wee hours in the morning when there are no people in the lounge. Another thing that put me off was the manner the hotel staff (I think there were 2 of them) handling the thrash bags from the guest elevator were throwing them on the floor and I could hear glass bottles shattering. They were doing it hastily. I was thinking, maybe they wanted to finish fast so the guests wouldn’t see much of the fiasco. But too late. Damage had been done. If anything, cleanliness is one of my primary criteria in rating a hotel, hostel, or even a budget accommodation. It doesn’t really matter if your property is posh or no-star at all but if it’s clean and follows sanitary standards then I can overlook the other flaws of the property.

Another thing I didn’t like in this hotel is the extremely slow elevators. We were billetted in the 9th floor. It took my hubby and I around 15-20 minutes to get in a lift. We had to go to the higher floors because there were barely available lifts passing our floor.

Lastly, the noise level of the nearby pubs could be heard even from our 9th floor hotel room. It was loud but I was just too sleepy to mind. Even then, if you stayed in the lower floors, then it would be louder.

Price:  $358 without taxes for 2 nights

Meal plan:
Breakfast on the go

Nearby attractions:
Times Square
Madison Square Garden
NBC Studios
Rockefeller Center
Port Authority
Bryant Park

My recommendation: 4 out of 5

I still give this a 4-stars rating per my recommendation because of the location,  the friendly and very accommodating staff, the comforts of the room amenities and the comfortable bed and the kitchenette that saved us mega bucks from dining out. This hotel is perfect for those who loves to go to the nearby Times Square and business travellers. Families and also those with pets can also enjoy this hotel as they allow pets.

Review – Beach Hotel by Bin Majid Hotels and Resorts in Ras Al Khaimah

Our trip to Ras Al Khaimah was an early celebration of Eid Al Fitr. It was also a nice moment to bond with my mom-in-law who had never set foot in RAK yet. The family had a great relaxing time in  Beach Hotel by Bin Majid Hotels & Resorts in Ras Al Khaimah. And who knew that a place like that existed if we haven’t checked out Booking.com‘s offers? Good thing my husband saw the deal just in time so we booked few days before we went to RAK and we certainly enjoyed the weekend getaway.

Beach Hotel by Bin Majid Hotels & Resorts is a private beach-front hotel along the caramel-hued sandy coastline of Ras Al Khaimah. It’s just few hours drive from Dubai. The property is a part of the Bin Majid Hotels’ chain of properties. It has 4-stars rating with 136 rooms to boast.

What I like:

General and Service
It’s a quiet hotel and gives me that very relaxing vibes.
The rate came with buffet breakfast.
The pool area is covered with plenty of covered seating areas where you can lounge and get covered. There were enough washing/shower areas so you don’t drag the sand back to your hotel room.
There’s a coffee shop and the restaurant also serves burgers + beers near the pool area! My husband certainly liked that!
The whole hotel has landscaped gardens and the lush greenery added a calming effect to the vacationers. Even the pool area is surrounded by trees and bushes.
The beach area is well-organized with elevated sun lounges so you really have a space to sunbathe or just sit back and enjoy the view of the sea.
The caramel-hue sand around the beach was so fine and we really enjoyed the beach area. It wasn’t crowded in the afternoon towards sunset.
The Concierge agent named Susana was very friendly and accommodating. We were checked in in less than 5 minutes.
There’s ample parking space for hotel guests and visitors.

Location
Just few hours drive from Dubai (approximately 45-60 minutes from Al Ghusais where we live to this hotel property on a Friday)
It’s located just as you enter Ras Al Khaimah and it’s easy to find. There is a signage before the flyover so you have to take the one at the bottom to turn to this property.
It’s nestled in lush greenery in a quiet beach community. It’s really ideal for a relaxing weekend away from the hustle and bustle of city life.

Rooms
Rooms are adequate even for a family of 3. We booked 2 rooms (3 adults in one standard bedroom and 2 adults in the other standard bedroom).
The beds and pillows were so comfortable. This is one of the best sleep I have ever had in an hotel.
There were enough cups and glasses in the room.
The bathroom was spacious with a bidet and separate tub-shower area.
The vanity table is long enough to accommodate mine and my daughter’s laptops.
The bathroom amenities were well stocked with enough towels for all of us.
I also like the fact that it has a hair dryer.

Food
The buffet breakfast has a very wide selection and we all loved it. We certainly enjoyed our hearty meals! Of all the places I have had eaten French Toast for breakfast, this is the only hotel where I really ate yummy French Toasts that were not so soggy and oily or buttery.  We had more than 2 slices each. It was that delicious!
We also enjoyed making our pancakes with the pancake machine. So cool!

The hotel also had selections for Arab and Far East Asian guests. You can choose some Indian food staple for breakfast if you prefer that.

What I don’t like:
Considering the features in the room, I can tell it’s an old one. The thermostat knob of the AC was antiquated that when I turned the knob to a low setting, it fell! I certainly don’t know if I returned it properly that the room remained cold throughout even when the setting was high temp. It’s because the knob was not properly aligned as I don’t know which is which.

There was no rubber stopper in the bathtub so I was unable to soak.

The small mini-bar fridge leaked.

The cabinet sliding doors were hard to slide. They kept jamming at a certain point and they were a bit heavy for a cabinet door.

The rooms given to us were 231 & 232. 232 had a city/mountain view while Room 231 had a very small view of the beach from the side.  We requested for a beach view but since there was a group booking, we didn’t get the adjacent rooms with the beach view.

No free wi-fi, not even in the lobby. Wi-fi connection for 24 hours is AED 80.

Facilities:
Olympic-sized swimming pool
Leisure activities such as jetski, windsurfing, scuba diving, beach volleyball, sun-bathing lounges Sports/Fitness centre
Business centre
Restaurants, coffee shop and clubs for entertainment
Landscaped garden around the hotel area

Nearby attractions:
2 kms away is the Iceland Water park
RAK Mall
City centre
beach area

Price: AED 300 per Standard Room per night, buffet breakfast included in the rate from Booking.com

Some snaps in the beach area:

My recommendation: 4 out of 5 (5 being the highest)

I recommend this property to families, groups and business travelers who are looking for a quick weekend getaway away from the city life. This property, albeit an old one, has clean facilities, friendly staff, spacious and clean rooms and a breath-taking view of the beautiful beach area of Ras Al Khaimah. I don’t mind booking again as long as they give me a beach view next time!

Review – Le Meridien Dubai and Conference Hotel

This is the first time we booked and stayed in Le Meridien. I used to sell it to my clients when I was still a travel agent. I would only have a glimpse of the Le Meridien splendour from the travel magazines I hand to my clients and they were fabulous photos of the property. So, my hubby and I jumped on the opportunity when our daughter was going to have her Graduation Ceremonies outside their school campus. We booked a deluxe room right away from Booking.com.

I am really impressed with the conservative look of this property. It gives you that opulent look without giving the vibes of being outlandish. The location is also a plus factor because it’s just few minutes away from Dubai International Airport Terminals. Aside from the good location, it is confined within the Le Meridien Village where numerous bars and restaurants line the cobble-stone pathway in this entertainment village. So, without further ado, below is my review of the five-star hotel.

What I like:

General and Service

  • Location – it is just few metres away from the Dubai International Airport, the GGICO Metro Station, restaurants and other entertainment establishments.
  • The efficient and friendly staff from the valet, bellhop, concierge, front desk agents and duty manager. They were all friendly, courteous, approachable and deeply rooted to their dedication to give service with a smile. It’s so hard to find that kind of service nowadays. I have to give my thumbs up and accolades to the men who were running the valet. We checked in around 12 noon and it was very hot that time and yet, not a single staff showed us a frown. We were greeted with warm, happy smiles despite of the heat. Now that is really worthy of mention and is going to be a great factor for me to book again in the future.
  • We were allowed to check-in early at 12 noon. I just had a brief mention of the reason why we booked the room because it was for my daughter’s graduation ceremony. The hotel was kind enough to release a room for us so we wouldn’t have to rush and be hassled with all the preparation.
  • The price was affordable considering it is a 5-star property. We got a very good deal from Booking.com for a deluxe double bedroom but upon check-in, we were upgraded to the Le Meridien Club Room.
  • The staff who delivered our lunch gave us extra 4 bottled water for free.
  • Check-out did not take a lot of time. I was even enrolled by the duty manager that time to their Starwood Preferred Guest Loyalty Programme.
  • Public transportation is readily available. Just ask the concierge.

Room

  • What can I say? Upgraded room! And the Le Meridien Executive Room is quite spacious with ultra modern amenities such as modern phones with hands free function and other features that I haven’t even tried nor seen before and the espresso/coffee maker is an added feature.
  • Aside from the spacious room, the down pillows are soft and the bed is comfortable.
  • The bathroom is big enough that I didn’t bump into anything nearby. There were 2 hairdryers as well so my daughter and I didn’t have to wait for the other’s turn.
  • The long vanity area near the TV also served as our table for our food.
  • The built-in lights can be dimmed with a control.
  • The study area is fancy and I like the curved design. It looked very classy and fitting for business travelers.
  • The big closet has mini-safe box to stash important and valuable items.
  • There were free slippers and shoe-cleaning kit.
  • 2 bathrobes were available for use and there were plenty of towels for everyone.
  • The shower area served as a huge bathtub as well.
  • It’s very quiet inspite of the fact that it is surrounded by restaurants and bars with live bands playing.
  • Well-stocked mini-bar

Food

  • Excellent in-dining experience for our supper! We also ordered during lunch and the selection is great!

Other amenities

  • It has gym, spa and pool for guests to use.
  • Valet parking
  • Business centre

What I don’t like:
I have to be fair in my review so I have to inform my readers that the coordination and lack of proper communication from one restaurant to the hotel’s concierge was a hassle. I also had to ask the hotel for improvement in that aspect. The service between the Le Meridien Village’s restaurant (Jules Bar where we ordered our lunch) must have coordination with the main hotel’s concierge. Our lunch arrived more than an hour after we have repeatedly called Jules Bar for follow-up only to be advised that they could not directly deliver to our room but the food would be given to the concierge to handle the delivery from there. We were guests and we wouldn’t know that, right? So far, that was the only hassle we had encountered.

Price: AED 450 per room per night (deluxe double bedroom) without taxes (good deal from Booking.com)

My recommendation: 5 out of 5

This 5-star property deserves a 5-star rating from me too! I give this a high five because of the excellent service they have provided, the wonderful amenities available for the guests and the luxurious and relaxing stay we had there. Will I book again? Definitely!
